Neuromas

Neuromas are enlarged, benign growth of nerves, typically found between the third and fourth toe. Enlargement is caused by tissue rubbing against the nerves, oftentimes caused by poorly fitting shoes or abnormal bone structure. The compression of this nerve can cause swelling and lead to permanent nerve damage. This can occur in between the metatarsal bones and other areas in the foot.

Symptoms

  • Tingling
  • Pain
  • Burning sensation
  • Numbness
  • Feeling like there’s something in the ball of your foot

Non-Surgical treatment options include padding to provide support for your metatarsal arch, icing to reduce swelling, custom foot orthotics to reduce the pressure of the nerve. Changning your footwear can make a huge difference such as buying wider shoes as opposed to narrow shoes. Over the counter medication such as Ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation and ease the pain associated with neuromas. Surgical treatment may be recommended if non-surgical treatment doesn’t help with the pain. Your podiatrist will determine how to treat you based on the stage of the neuroma and your daily lifestyle.
